Name

- Yes, Lumsden supports that or at least that it was called both, he also gives 'E' numbers for other Napier types. I've seen these 'E' numbers before, they appear to be used across different companies and don't seem to run in chronological order! Lumsden has the Lion II of 1919 as the 'E.64', around about 1937 there was a Ricardo/Rolls-Royce 'E.44' project.
- From the main reference book used for the Rolls-Royce Crecy it states in a fairly vague way that these 'E' numbers were contracts or specifications issued by the 'Engine Sub-Committee of the Aeronautical Research Committee'. Probably along the lines of list of Air Ministry specifications with 'E' standing for engine at a wild guess! Must be a master list somewhere? I'll see if I can dig up anything solid on it.
